What is developmental screening?

Screening is the process of measuring a child's development. Depending on your child's age and where the screening takes place, we utilize either the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) or the Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning, Fourth Edition (DIAL-4) to look at the areas of:

  • Speech and language

  • Motor skills

  • General knowledge

  • Hearing

  • Vision

  • Self-Help Skills

  • Social-Emotional Development

Why should I have my child screened?n/a

Children rapidly grow and change through the early years. Nearly 90% of all brain development happens in the first five years of life. 1 in 8 children in the United States have a developmental delay and many are not identified by the time they enter kindergarten. That is why Pediatricians recommend annual screenings for children 0-5. Screening provides parents with information on the individual growth of their child and the early detection of potential delays that may affect later learning.

How long does the screening take?

The entire screening process takes approximately 60 minutes. We strive to make each child feel comfortable. The screening program is designed to be a positive learning experience for you and your child.

Who is eligible?

Any child, age 3 months until Kindergarten entry, who resides within the Orchard Farm School District boundaries.

Will I be present?

For children between the ages of 3 months and 35 months the parent is always present and many times a screening is completed within the home environment.

For children between the ages of 3-5, we ask our parents to wait in our lobby area until the screening is complete.  If your child struggles to separate we will make accommodations as each child's individual needs are always considered throughout the process.

What happens after screening?

A developmental screener will share with you the results of your child's screening. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, share information and express any concerns you may have about your child's development.

What if my child needs further testing?

If the screening indicates an area of concern, a referral for further testing may be recommended. If it is determined that your child might be eligible for early intervention services, then we provide guidance through the process to determine a program to help your child learn and succeed.

How much will it cost?

Screening is a component of the Parents as Teachers program and is funded by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. There is no cost to you.
