Hot Air Balloon FlightProject Lead the Way is a curriculum offered here at the Orchard Farm on all levels (Elementary through High School).  At the middle school level, we offer six different courses called Gateway courses (also GTT) which expose students to a variety of engineering focuses and give students an opportunity to explore these fields.  During the second semester of 7th grade, students are offered a course called Flight and Space. Students explore the world of flight and how it works, starting with the history of flight and moving into the physics behind it.  After working through the history of flight, students work on a Hot Air Balloon project. Hot Air Balloons were the first flight vehicles available.

Students use their measuring, instruction following, and creative skills to build and test a hot air balloon which culminates in a launch in the gym.  It is a great way for students to also get exposed to how hot balloons trap the rising hot air and use it to get off the ground.  Students also use their artistic skills to create sponsor logos for their balloons and show them off on the sides of their balloons.
