History of Future Ready in OFSD

The Committee:  In September of 2015, the district invited families to participate in a newly developed committee, the Future Ready Committee; focused on K-6 growth and configuration.  The committee made up of 15 parents, 6 teachers, 6 administrators, and 3 school board members met on three different occasions, totaling roughly 10 hours.  The committee analyzed district enrollment, conducted building tours, and analyzed the capacity of each of our school buildings.  From there, the committee identified strengths and weaknesses and then worked to develop guiding principles that they would use in the decision-making process.  Additionally, they commissioned, with the Board of Education’s approval, the work of a demographer to conduct a full study of our enrollment projections for the next 10 years.

The Recommendation:  At their meeting on February 3rd, the committee reached a 100% consensus in their recommendation to the Board of Education to reconfigure our existing elementary schools into two, separate K-5 buildings in August 2017.  The Board of Education approved this recommendation at their February meeting.

The Feedback:  Surveys completed by committee members revealed the following:

  • 100% of members rated this as a positive experience, with the reasonable time commitment, and they would serve on the committee again if given the opportunity.
  • 21 of 22 members felt that their voice was well valued, of which 80% felt their voice was “extremely well valued”
  • Comments included:
    • Love the vision/forward-thinking approach of the district and its administrators.
    • Everyone felt welcomed to give their opinion and ask questions.
    • It felt like the board and administration valued our input.
    • Everyone had a voice!  I loved the entire process!
    • I felt like this committee truly made decisions that were valued, without pressure from the administration to reach a particular decision.
